with the $ at approx 2:1 to the £, that would be ..... let's see, if I had to pay £32 for something, that would come out of my credit card at about $64. So, yes, £32k would equal $64k, which is a nice middle-class wage here.

Depending on where you live and if you bought a house before the housing market went through the roof. Five years ago, $64k would have gotten you half of a very respectable home on the East Coast. Now, even after the prices have begun to fall, $64k would get you only about 1/5th of a starter home that needs a lot of work. Trust me. I know. I earn right in that range and I feel like I'll never get out of debt or into home without really scrimping and saving every penny and buying a hovel to begin with.

If you live on the West Coast, $64k is chump change. You might not be able to live on it.

In the Midwest, it still seems like $64k is decent, based on the cost of living. But for how long?
