All I know is I am in constant pain in my abdomine, and low back.
Swelling is so bad I can not have a proper bowel movement and when I take stool softners my fecees comes out flat like a lasagnia noodle. I am in so much pain, I am scheduled for a hysteroscope and a hysterectomy next month. I hope it helps.
I am so sick of the pain. I just want to be normal again.
I so wish I had not had the Uterine Ablition and the Essure, and I wish my doctor hadn't insisted on doing them together the same day same surgery!
What a mess.
Beware of doctors whom insist on things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get second opinions always!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Luck to you all.

Hello -- I am a television news producer working on a story about Essure, and would love to hear from some of you who have had or are considering the Essure procedure -- both good stories and bad. Please send me a message ********** if you would be interested in talking with me, and would consider being interviewed as part of our story.

Thanks very much in advance,
Wendy

Hi, I just wanted to check in an give an update on mine. For those who didnt know, I had my surgery done on 10-27-08. I really didnt have any issues with pain besides with intercourse and I still havent found the courage to try again. I did have some problems with spotting, but was told that was due to the pill I was on. On 1-23-09 I had my HSG done, and I can say that for me, it hurt like h.... I did find out that my tubes are blocked and I was given the go ahead to go off the pill. For now, I really dont have much bad to say about it, but should my situation change, you will be one of the first to know.

For me, I wouldnt recommend the surgery in place of a regular tubligation. I found it to be more expensive than expected.

Good luck to all of you who are having problems with it. I hope you get it straightened out. None of you deserve it.

Hello all! I will keep my story simple...we all have one.

Essure done 3/08. Rside done no prob then 2 scopes broke while inside me. 3rd scoped used, placed Essure but it was VERY difficult to place. (I was awake and watched it all...no meds) Dr T even said she could not see well at all and figured we would have to redo that side.

6 week check-up. still bleeding, major pain (I have a very high pain tolerance) and super swollen still ( I looked 6 months preg) Dr T put me on meds for possible infection (no Bloodwork) 10 days later returned not better. TVUS showed major infection/or fluid in tubes. Set to ER and admitted to Hosp for 2 days.

I have had constant left side pain, cycle based major swelling, abnormal periods... I was sent to and EDO Dr by my Neuro to rule out a hormone problem. (MRI showed emlarged pituitary gland)she thinks I am nuts and just under too much stress. Dr T who did Essure has had the wait and see if you feel better attitude. The Endo Dr (W) ordered a TVUS and the tech could see the left Essure outside of the tube. (11 coils had been left out when placed) the report stated that I needed another HSG, because this is out of place.Dr W said no not needed!

My Gen Dr stopped working so now I have a new one. She examined me today, just feeling the outside of my tummy and can FEEL the ESSURE! She told me to see a new OBGYN, (I had gone to Boston in May 08 after the Hosp stay...he told me it was in my head!) She is making a new obgyn see me.

Someone posted that you can remove these without a Hyst...but were the coils only in the tube? I have been told I would need a total Hyst... Any info would be great!

Thanks!

My doctor is also suggesting I get a hysterectomy. She just called me today and had spoken with an Essure rep who said that it's very rare for women to experience this kind of pain after having the procedure done. I didn't say anything about this site, but I'm thinking it's not so rare! Anyway, we've racked up thousands in medical bills, been sent to different specialists because the GYN says it's not a problem she can help with. All the crazy stuff they've put me through (including a colonoscopy!) has shown normal results. However, the CT scan showed that I have cysts and unreleased eggs around my ovaries. These were not there prior to my Essure procedure. Now they want to do laparoscopy, possibly remove the coils with the possibility of also doing a hysterectomy. Any advice, suggestions, experiences?

Get a contingency medical malpractice lawyer or class action lawyer! Sorry about the major medical bills and pain.
ME TOO!

I'm scheduled for an HSG and hysterectomy pre-op apt next week.
I'm scared to death to tell the truth. I don't like being scared to death, especially since I didn't even opt to get these for birth control, my obgyn insisted because I went in for a uterine ablition for painful heavy periods and she didn't want me risking an etopic pregancy. I wasn't even with a man at the time and promised to used spermicidal condoms if I did get with one!
AUGH! What a Mess, Hang in there, I'm sorry I couldn't have warned you before you had this problem too.
I hope we can help inform others to keep these adverse effects from happeing to them.

I so wish my gyn had just talked my insurance into a tubal!
I bet he does now too.

I hope I can keep my ovaries, I don't want to go through menopause at my young age, I thought I'd at least have another 10yrs before that!
this suks!

Really they said you would have to have a Total? Hysterectomy?
Now I am really scared, I wanna keep my ovaries! at least one!
Boooo Hoooo! :-(((((((((((((((((

Janine,

A total hysterectomy does not mean removing the ovaries. It just means removing the total uterus, including cervix (as opposed to sub-total or supracervical where they leave the cervix). Ovary removal is referred to as an oopherectomy.

I also had my Essure done at the same time as my endometrial ablation. Didn't need the birth control at the time, but was told that Essure placement might be more difficult or impossible AFTER the ablation. Guess that was a waste of money, since I never "used" them so to speak. Oh well.

Thank You I didn't know total hysterectomy meant you could leave the ovaries.

With the Essure in the fallopian tubes is the ovary attached to the fallopian tube is it difficult to take the fallpian tubes out without taking the ovaries too?

Obviously anatomy isn't my expertise so I'm not sure about fallopian tubes and ovary anatomy and hysterectomies.?

Anita,
Thanks for letting me know I might get to keep my ovaries!
I pray!

Janine,

It is possible to remove the fallopian tubes without removing the ovaries, too. I believe they refer to removing the tubes as a salpingectomy.

I'm not sure how long the tubes are, but keep in mind that the Essure coil is placed at the opposite end from the ovary, since part of it actually trails into the uterus.

My doctor that placed my Essure and then offered to remove them was planning on just removing the part of the tube with the coils, and said that he would cauterize the remaining part of the tube similar to what he would do in a traditional tubal ligation.

I opted for the hysterectomy. I was able to keep my cervix and both ovaries. Never asked exactly how much of my tubes are left. Guess it didn't really matter that much to me.

Hi Ladies,

First I am so sorry for those who have had it really bad with essure.
It kinda makes me feel like im just whining about my problems, I think mine are minor compared to the others that I have read.

I had the Essure procedure done On May 30, 2008, it was done while i was put out with anesthia, so i didnt get to watch (which i am glad for cause i was very nervous) I did have a little cramping after the procedure for about a day. Bleeding was med-Heavy. Everything seemed fine, until I have noticed that I really haven't stopped bleeding and spoting in abnormal patterns. I go from really heavy bleeding to spotting and passing clots. Some days I really dont bleed at all, but almost always follows really heavy bleeding. I have noticed my back hurts more than it use too and i feel light headed and dizzy and just weak at times. I do have cramping but it is usally mildly bareable.

I am also a very low-income, with a 5 girls . Im putting off going to the doctor for this reason. I need my hours at work and don't want to go and waste any money if not needed. And Im not on any medicaid or well fare.

So I guess what my question is? Did any one start out with these types of symtoms that progessively got worse? Should I be worried? Or am I just Whining? After reading everyones post it makes me work about my finacial situation.

Well I hope someone respones. And sorry for the long post.

Mary

I had the Essure procedure done in the last week of January but my obgyn was only successful on the left side - he tried to do the right side but said the device wouldn't deploy and had his office re-schedule me to come in the following week.

The second time around was more painful and the Essure rep was also present during the procedure. It went on for at least a half hour, until my obgyn discovered that the device had deployed the first time (i.e. the previous week), and the introducer had been left behind. That was why he couldn't get the device in this time around. He tried to retrieve the original introducer but was unsuccessful - and all the rep had to say was it sometimes happens but that it was safe to just leave it in there, and that it may just be expelled (how? I don't know). He now wants to re-schedule me for a tubal - I wonder if I should just go see another obgyn. I've also experienced more cramping than usual in my menstrual cycle this past week.
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced a faulty device?

I had an attempted tubal ligation under general anesthesia in 2006, during which my heart stopped for a few seconds, freaked the OR people out and they would not continue. My primary care physician insisted no more general anesthesia unless it's an emergency, so, I explored other options. I had the first "attempt" at Essure placement in July of 2008. Only one side deployed and the doctor said I had to come back and get the other side done because I had some weird fluid problem where they had to abort the procedure because my body was absorbing all the fluid they were injecting to be able to see to do the procedure. It was done under IV sedation, so I had no discomfort during or even afterwards. Just minor spotting for a couple of weeks. Went back in November 2008 and had the other side done, same thing - weird fluid absorption, but she got it in and I went home but this time had a lot of bad cramping that day, but nothing afterwards and no spotting at all. Throughout this I've still been taking Yaz as a backup. I haven't had any pain and I have had very light periods, sometimes nothing at all, but that could be because of the Yaz.

Today (02/19/2009) went for the HSG. Oh boy. That was VERY painful and I passed out on the table. Only to come to and realize that the results were that NEITHER tube was blocked. I was beyond angry. After all of this, and it didn't even work. She very nonchalantly informed me that I would just have to have an IUD or stay on birth control pills and left the room. Now I am stuck with these implants that are WORTHLESS and still have to have another form of birth control.

I'm just so angry because this doctor said she had "wonderful" results from so many patients that were happy to have this done. I'm definitely glad that I don't have any pain issues, but I've never read anything about anybody else who had them placed and neither one of them "doing their job" at blocking the tubes. I'm definitely going to consult another OB/GYN about my options at this point. I've been on birth control pills for 19 years and was looking to get off of artificial hormones!

meena1197, It sounds like maybe the implants are out of place because most of the time when someone is not blocked they say to come back again and repeat the HSG. I'd definately find out if the metal coils have migrated.

Choix777, There is some ruling that the FDA made about leaving devices or device fragments in place. I'll look it up.

If I have to have another HSG done, they need to sedate me. That was awful. But after six months, the left side still isn't blocked? I can almost see the right side not being completely blocked at three months, but not the left one. I think my doctor screwed up placing them and now I am in a position where my choices are very limited. Has anybody had these removed without a hysterectomy??

Some of the reports are starting to show up on the maude FDA website. Not because the wonderfully honest company reported the problems or the concerned for their patient's doctors. Ladies please file your report. This is the only way the problems with this procedure will be realized.

I went ahead and filed a report on the FDA website. I'm upset because I am now being charged for both procedures and they are trying to schedule me for tubal ligation since Essure didn't work.

choix777, The FDA has passed some sort of law that says that all device fragments should be removed. If they cannot be safely removed then the patient must be informed of all the potential risks involved with leaving the devices in place. Look up FDA medical device fragment retrieval. There are risks associated with leaving metal devices in place and especially since the doctor left the introducer in place which shouldn't be in there at all. The company does not want you to have them removed because it makes there product look bad. If you will really look hard at the Maude FDA site, you will see that the company is not reporting any problems nor or the doctors. I had to report mine, and some other women have started reporting there problem because you cannot rely on the company nor the doctors to do so. They know this is not good practice. Leaving objects that have potential to do damage and should they migrate the possibility of perforation of major organs. Also pm me and if you are interested, I am pursuing action against the essure metal coils.

Mary,

I thought I was in heaven after I received Essure! I was on Mirena prior to that, and experienced horrible bloating, weight gain, depression, and mood swings. Essure seemed to be my answer. My procedure went perfectly well, with me being awake. My HSG was great, no problems. I experienced a heavier-than-normal period at first, but I thought that was just my body cleaning itself out after the almost non-existent periods with Mirena.

Slowly, over months, I noticed my lower back beginning to ache. I just chalked it up to sitting for too long, or bending for too long, or anything else I could think of. Then I thought it was pre-menstrual. Now, it's pretty much an every day event. Today, I planted irises, and cried afterward. My back was killing me, and my left leg started going numb. I can't "chalk that up" to anything normal. After sitting at my desk, when I get up to walk somewhere else, I have to walk stooped over for a bit, until my back "loosens up" enough for me to straighten up. I wasn't like this pre-Essure. In fact, I loved gardening and was pretty active. Now, it all depends.

I also have started experiencing shooting pains on my right side, lower abdomen, right about where my Essure should be.

I'm speaking to my doctor about having them removed and having a hysterectomy performed. I'm not going to accept a lower quality of life due to Essure.

I'll keep everyone updated.
