Unevenly Sized Breasts A Predictor Of Breast Cancer

Unevenly sized breasts can indicate a predisposition to develop breast cancer, say researchers from the University of Liverpool in England. While the study, in the journal Breast Cancer Research, was only based on an analysis of 500 women, the researchers believe that breast asymmetry can be a significant predictor of breast cancer risk.

University of Liverpool researcher Diane Scutt conducted the study by analyzing the mammograms of 252 women who did not have breast cancer at the time of the mammography, but later developed the disease. The control group consisted of 252 women matched for age who underwent mammography at the same time, but did not later develop breast cancer.

The results indicated that, at the time the mammography was done, the women who went on to develop breast cancer had higher breast volume asymmetry than the women in the control group. The researchers calculated that the relative odds of breast cancer increased by 1.5 for a 100ml increase in breast volume asymmetry. They consequently deem that breast asymmetry is a significant independent predictor of breast cancer, and could be a reliable indicator of future breast disease.
