Various degrees of breast asymmetry are extremely common among women, leading to reduced sexuality, self-esteem and confidence, says the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). According to surgeons at the ASPS Plastic Surgery 2006 meeting, the answer to the problem is for women to undergo (surprise, surprise) plastic surgery.

Breast asymmetry can manifest in any number of ways, but the most common are single breast droops, or a difference in breast volume of anything up to a whole cup size. "All women have some degree of breast asymmetry, but for those with a noticeable difference, the embarrassment often keeps them from seeking help," said Walter Erhardt, ASPS Member Surgeon. "Breast asymmetry can be emotionally devastating for women. Even if breasts differ by less than a half-cup size it can be very noticeable."

The ASPS wants to alert women that seeking help to correct their breast imbalance should not be an embarrassing ordeal, as there are many women out there experiencing the same condition. They contend that undergoing breast lifts, breast augmentation, breast reduction, or any of these procedures in combination leads to an improved quality of life. According to a study conducted by the ASPS, all of the women that had corrective surgery had a statistically significant improvement in vitality, mental health and self-esteem 6 months after surgery.

"The condition is talked about so infrequently that many are unaware there are surgeries that can correct the problem," says Dr. Erhardt. "Women need to know this condition is extremely common, and there is nothing to be ashamed of in getting help that will improve their quality of life and self-esteem."
